Pristine, sandy beaches, quaint beachside neighborhoods, and the illustrious backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean make Topsail Beach a prime location for shooting portraits and engagement pictures. The wood pylons and the pier there also make for a nice environment for pictures.
This beautiful North Carolina community is located on the southern end of the long and narrow Topsail Island, which lies parallel to the southeastern coast of North Carolina, just off of Hwy 17. Topsail Beach shares the island with Surf City in the middle of the island and North Topsail Beach at the north end.
It enjoys a varied and rich history, with a particularly interesting story behind the name: The channel behind the island became an infamous hiding spot for pirate ships in the 18th century as they would wait for unsuspecting merchant ships full of cargo to pass by. Savvy merchants eventually learned to watch for the tops of the pirate ships’ sails protruding from behind profile of the island.
After being used by the government during and after World War II, the island was sold to the public and incorporated in 1963. The town now boasts a seasonal population of around 7,000.
